When you are pregnant and scared, the "Pro-Life" movement mobilizes to surround you. They bring diapers. They bring onesies. They promise you that you can do this.
"Choose life," they say. "There are programs to help you." "God will provide."
They sell you a fantasy of a supportive village that will rally around you and your child. They are lying.
This is not a judgment on mothers; this is an audit of the system. Here is the data they don’t tell you about the 18 years that come after the birth.
1. The "Programs" Are a Myth
They tell you to keep the baby because there is a safety net. The truth? The net is full of holes, and the system is designed for you to fall right through it.
WIC and EBT will put milk and cereal in the fridge. That is it. They do not pay rent. They do not buy gas. And they certainly do not pay for childcare.
Subsidized Housing (Section 8) has a waitlist that is literally years long in most counties. In many places, the lists are closed indefinitely.
The "Cliff Effect": The system is designed so that if you earn just $1 over the limit, you lose all your benefits. It forces you to stay poor to keep your healthcare or food stamps.
2. The Childcare Trap (The Career Killer)
The biggest lie is that you can "just work."
If you have dreams of going back to school or finishing your degree, get ready to put them on ice for five years.
0 to 3 Years Old: Daycare costs a mortgage payment. Unless you have a high-paying job or wealthy family, you are effectively under house arrest.
Subsidized Daycare: This is another waitlist system. You usually need a job to apply for the voucher, but you can't get the job without childcare. It is a closed loop designed to keep you stagnant.
For five years, you are out of the workforce. Your skills atrophy. You miss out on job training because there is no one to watch the child while you train. And the "village"? Grandma and Auntie can't help you because they are working past 60 just to survive.
3. The Preschool-to-Prison Pipeline
Then comes the heartbreaking reality for mothers of Black boys. You wait five years for school to start so you can finally breathe and work. But the moment your son steps into that classroom, the algorithm identifies him as a "problem."
According to a landmark study by the Yale Child Study Center, preschool teachers—both Black and White—spend significantly more time watching Black boys for "bad behavior" than any other demographic.
He is five years old, but the system treats him like a suspect.
They suspend him for being "disruptive" (which is usually just unaddressed trauma, giftedness, or a neurodivergent disability).
The Result: You are constantly leaving work to pick him up. You lose your job. You can’t hold down steady employment.
The 54/12 Reality: This is where the pipeline begins. They push him out of the classroom and onto the street before he can even read.
4. The Ultimate Hypocrisy: "The Welfare Queen"
This is the cruelest twist of the knife.
The SAME PEOPLE who stood outside the clinic and told you to "Choose Life" are the ones who will call you a "Welfare Queen" when you need help raising that life.
They will call you lazy for not working (even though childcare costs $1,500/month).
They will blame you for your child’s disability or behavioral struggles.
They will blame you for "choosing" an abuser or a man who abandoned you.
They need a villain, and the single Black mother is their favorite target.
5. The Predator’s Playground
When you are drowning, you look for a lifeline. Maybe you try to find community in a church. Maybe you try dating again to find a partner to help carry the load.
Be warned.
Predators hunt single mothers. They know you are tired. They know you are lonely. They know you are desperate for help.
If you bring a man around and abuse happens, society will say, "You should have chosen better."
If you get pregnant again and he leaves, they will say, "You didn't learn your lesson the first time?"
It is always, always your fault in the eyes of the public.
Fresh Meat for the Machine
This is the dark truth pro-lifers won't whisper: They want you to keep the baby so the system has new victims.
They need new bodies for the prisons. They need new, desperate workers for low-wage jobs. They need new single mothers to point at and shame so they can feel superior.
It is about power. It is about control. And once you sign that birth certificate, you and your child become "Fresh Meat" for the machine.
A Warning, Not a Judgment
If you do not have a wealthy family, a fierce support system, or a high-paying career already secured, you need to know what you are signing up for.
Society will not help you.
The programs are a lie.
The school system is a trap.
You must walk into this with your eyes wide open. We do not ask for permission; we ask for coordinates. Know the terrain so you can navigate the storm.
