If you are tired of the suspensions, the "behavioral issues" labels that only seem to stick to Black boys, or the whitewashed history books, you are not alone. You are waking up to the reality that the School-to-Prison Pipeline is running at full capacity in North Carolina.
(The Reality Check: According to recent data from the NC Department of Public Instruction, while Black students make up only about 25% of the student population, they account for approximately 51% of all short-term suspensions. The system is statistically targeting our sons.)
The only way to shut down the pipeline is to pull our children out of the water.
Homeschooling is no longer just for religious conservatives or wealthy families. It is the new frontier of Black liberation. Whether you want to build a private academy or just need a safe public option at home, here is your guide to taking control.
Option 1: The Middle Ground (Tuition-Free Online Public School)
“I need him safe at home, but I can’t teach Calculus.”
If you aren't ready to build a curriculum from scratch, or if you need a recognized diploma without the building, Online Public School is your answer. These are tuition-free, taxpayer-funded schools that your child attends from your living room.
1. Telra Institute's Remote Academy (The "High-Performance" Choice)
Best For: Students who are bored in regular school and need to move faster.
The Vibe: Telra is a charter school known for "acceleration." Unlike standard schools that hold smart kids back, Telra lets them fly. If your 4th grader is ready for 6th-grade math, they let him take it.
The Setup: It is a tuition-free, public charter option available to NC residents. It combines online coursework with "human-centric" teacher support.
Why We Like It: It fits the "Black Excellence" model. It isn't just about safety; it's about rigor.
2. North Carolina Virtual Academy (NCVA) or NC Cyber Academy (NCCA)
Best For: A clean break. If you want nothing to do with Gaston County Schools but still want a public charter education.
The Vibe: These are statewide virtual charter schools. They are fully separate from the local district.
The Setup: They send you the materials (sometimes even loaner computers). The curriculum is set, the teachers are certified, and attendance is tracked. It is "School," just at your kitchen table.
The Historical Pivot: The Ida B. Wells Standard
“Why shouldn't I just leave them in public school?”
Before she was an anti-lynching crusader, Ida B. Wells was a school teacher.
In 1891, she was fired from the Memphis school system. Why? Because she dared to expose the inequality: Black schools had fewer resources, worse buildings, and less funding than white schools. She realized early on that the system was designed to fail her students.
But Ida didn't just complain. She practiced Strategic Withdrawal.
After her friends were lynched in Memphis, she didn't ask for an apology. She told Black people to leave the city. She urged them to take their money, their labor, and their families out of Memphis. She famously said, "There is nothing we can do about the lynching now... but there is one thing we can do... save our money and leave a town which will neither protect our lives and property, nor give us a fair trial in the courts."
Homeschooling is our modern Strategic Withdrawal. We are withdrawing our children—our most valuable asset—from a system that will not protect them. We are taking our tax dollars (via programs like ESA+) and leaving the building. Like Ida, we are realizing that we cannot heal inside a system designed to harm us.
The Psychological Diagnosis: Dr. Joy DeGruy's Warning
“What is the school actually doing to my child?”
If Ida B. Wells gives us the history, Dr. Joy DeGruy (author of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome) gives us the psychology. She explains exactly why our sons can walk into school happy and walk out angry.
1. The Cure for "Vacant Esteem"
Dr. DeGruy identifies a condition called "Vacant Esteem"—which is different from low self-esteem. It is the feeling of having no intrinsic worth because the society (and school) reflects nothing positive back to you.
The School's Role: When a school ignores Black history, suspends Black boys for minor infractions, and never shows them as heroes in textbooks, it creates Vacant Esteem.
The Homeschool Cure: At home, you fill that vacancy with "Knowledge of Self." You teach him he is a descendant of Kings, Architects, and Scientists. You build a shield of self-worth that the world cannot break.
2. Racial Socialization is the Antidote
Dr. DeGruy argues that the only cure for "Racist Socialization" (what they get in the world) is "Racial Socialization" (what they get at home).
You cannot rely on the system to teach your child to love themselves. The system is designed to do the opposite.
Homeschooling allows you to control the narrative 24/7, turning your kitchen table into a place of healing.
Option 2: Independent Homeschooling (The Revolution)
“I want to decolonize his mind completely.”
If you are ready to follow Ida's lead and Dr. Joy's prescription—to teach Black history in August, to focus on entrepreneurship, or to use a faith-based curriculum—you want Independent Homeschooling.
The Pros: Why We Leave
Decolonizing the Curriculum: You teach "Knowledge of Self" every single day.
Safety from "The Label": In public school, a high-energy Black boy is a "threat." At home, he is a scientist in training. You remove the teacher bias that criminalizes normal childhood behavior.
Physical Safety: You control the environment. No bullies, no unvetted adults, and no threats you can't see.
The Cons: The Price We Pay
The Financial Hit: It requires a sacrifice. You may have to switch to one income, work from home, or barter heavily within your Care Circle.
The Fatigue: You are the Principal, the Teacher, and the Mom. It is exhausting. (This is why the Microschool model is vital).
How to Get Started in NC (The Legal Checklist)
North Carolina is one of the friendliest states for homeschooling. Here is your Step-by-Step guide.
1. The "Notice of Intent"
You must file a "Notice of Intent to Operate a Home School" with the NC Division of Non-Public Education (DNPE).
Requirement: You must have a High School Diploma or GED.
Timing: File this before you stop sending your child to public school to avoid truancy charges.
2. Name Your School
Give your school a powerful name. "The [Your Last Name] Academy of Excellence" or "The Moors Science Institute." This name will go on their transcripts and diplomas forever. Make it dignified.
3. The Requirements (Keep It Simple)
Attendance: You must operate for at least 9 months of the year.
Immunization Records: Keep them on file.
Testing: You must administer a nationally standardized test (like the IOWA or CAT) once a year. The state does not see the scores; you just keep them in your file drawer.
Microschooling: Don't Do It Alone
You do not have to sit at your kitchen table alone. Combine forces. If you have a Care Circle, you already have a Microschool.
Mom A (The Math Whiz): Teaches Math to all 3 kids on Mondays.
Mom B (The Reader): Handles Literature and History on Tuesdays.
Mom C (The Creative): Handles Art and Science experiments on Wednesdays.
We are returning to the village. We are taking back our tax dollars via ESA+. And we are raising children who know exactly who they are.
Class is in session.
The Blueprint: The "University of Islam" Model
We don't have to reinvent the wheel. We can look to the Nation of Islam (NOI), which created one of the most successful independent school systems in American history: The University of Islam.
Their educational strategy was genius. They removed their children from public schools because they believed those schools taught "mental slavery."
How to Adapt the NOI Model:
Strict Discipline & Routine: The NOI schools didn't play. They taught manners, posture, and respect. Create a home environment that requires high standards.
Heavy STEM Focus: They emphasized Math and Astronomy heavily. Why? Because math is the language of the universe. Teaching your Black son high-level math is an act of rebellion.
Knowledge of Self: Every subject should be anchored in identity. When you teach biology, teach about Henrietta Lacks. When you teach traffic lights, teach about Garrett Morgan. Build his self-esteem so high that American racism cannot reach it.
Separation: They understood that sometimes, you need to separate to grow. Create a space where your child is not the "minority," but the standard.
The Infrastructure: The Church as Headquarters (The MLK Model)
While the NOI had the Mosque, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had the Church.
Historically, the Black Church was more than just a place to worship. It was the community center, the political hall, the bank, and the "Headquarters" of the movement. It was the only institution Black people truly owned.
We need to reclaim the Church as our educational headquarters.
Most churches sit empty from Monday to Friday. This is wasted real estate. If you are forming a Care Circle or Microschool and don't have space at home:
Approach your Pastor: Ask to use a classroom or the fellowship hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
The Pitch: "Pastor, we are saving our sons from the pipeline. We don't need money; we need space. We need a safe sanctuary to teach them."
The Benefit: It provides a safe, insured, and neutral location for moms to meet, teach, and pool resources.
We take the Discipline of the Mosque and the Infrastructure of the Church. That is how we win.
The Game Changer: The ESA+ Scholarship ($9,000+)
"I can't afford to homeschool." If your child has an IEP (Individualized Education Program), North Carolina might pay you to do it.
The ESA+ (Education Student Accounts) program is a state scholarship for students with disabilities.
The Bag: Award amounts can be up to $9,000 a year (or more for certain disabilities).
The Use: You can use this money for curriculum, tutoring, educational therapy, technology, and tuition at private microschools.
The Loophole: You can pull your child out of the public school that is failing them, keep the IEP active for eligibility, and use the state's money to build a custom education that actually works.
The Loophole: How to Hire a Private Teacher for FREE
This is the strategy that changes everything. If you have a child with an IEP, you are not just getting money for books; you are getting a budget for personnel.
1. The "Pooling" Strategy You don't have to do this alone.
If one mom gets the ESA+ award, she has ~$9,000. That pays for a curriculum and some part-time tutoring.
But if four moms in your Care Circle all have IEPs and get the ESA+ award, you now have a combined budget of $36,000.
The Play: You pool that money to hire a private, Black educator to teach your four children. You have essentially created a private school where the state pays the salary, and your church can host this for free.
2. How to Pay Her (ClassWallet)
North Carolina uses a digital platform called ClassWallet. You don't get a check in the mail; the money sits in this digital account.
Adding Your Teacher: Your hired teacher must register as a "Provider" in ClassWallet.
The Criteria: Usually, the educator needs a teaching license, a college degree in the subject area, or specific credentials to be approved. (Check the
for the exact provider requirements).NCSEAA website The Payment: Once she is approved, you log in to ClassWallet, select her as the provider, and pay her directly from your ESA+ funds for "Tutoring Services."
3. The "Microschool" Setup
The Location: Remember the Church model? You meet at the church (or a rotating home) 3-4 days a week.
The Schedule: The hired teacher handles the heavy lifting (Math, Reading, Science) from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM.
The Result: This serves as Education AND Childcare. You are getting a private tutor, a culturally safe environment, and child supervision—all paid for by the ESA+ scholarship.
